People in Ashaiman, Ghana, have mixed feelings about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise to lower the cost of living. Dr. Bawumia, the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), recently announced this plan as part of the party’s 2024 election manifesto.
Madam Vida Owusu, a hairdresser, is skeptical about this promise. She pointed out that the NPP has been in power for eight years, during which the cost of living has only gotten worse. She feels that the party has not done a good job managing the economy and hasn’t addressed the real reasons why prices are so high. Madam Owusu called on the party to explain how they plan to make life cheaper without harming economic growth.
Ms. Mary Adu, who works as a trader, shares similar doubts. She stressed that just talking about reducing the cost of living isn’t enough; she wants to see real actions. She noted that high living costs are hurting businesses like hers and making it hard to get by. Ms. Adu urged Dr. Bawumia to lay out a clear and detailed plan, including specific steps to make everyday items more affordable and to be honest about how these changes will be carried out.
On the other hand, some people support Dr. Bawumia’s ideas. Inusah Ahmed, a shopkeeper, believes that Dr. Bawumia is a capable leader who can deliver on his promises. He thinks the NPP flagbearer’s vision is achievable and that it could help ease the current economic difficulties.
However, not everyone is convinced. Fati Tahiru, another trader, feels the manifesto is just a collection of old promises that were never fulfilled. She described it as “full of empty promises” and criticized it for lacking any new ideas or concrete plans. Fati expressed her disappointment, feeling that Dr. Bawumia seems out of touch with the struggles of ordinary people.
Overall, while some are hopeful about the NPP’s promises, others remain doubtful, wanting more than just words to solve the real challenges they face every day.
