United States President Joe Biden has announced that he will not be running for reelection in the upcoming 2024 presidential race. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), President Biden expressed that serving as president has been the highest honor of his life.
“Although I had intended to run for reelection, I believe that stepping aside is in the best interest of both my party and the country. I will focus on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he stated.
Biden’s Message to the Nation
President Biden plans to address the nation later this week to provide more details about his decision. He conveyed his deepest gratitude to those who supported his reelection campaign and extended thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her an “extraordinary partner” in their administration’s efforts.
In his statement, Biden highlighted the achievements of his administration, emphasizing the strong economic position of the United States, historic investments in rebuilding the nation, lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and expanding affordable healthcare. He also noted the provision of care for veterans exposed to toxic substances, the passing of the first gun safety law in 30 years, the appointment of the first African American woman to the Supreme Court, and significant climate legislation.
“We have made great progress as a Nation. Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today,” Biden said.
Achievements and Gratitude
Biden acknowledged the challenges faced during his term, including overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. He praised the American people for their resilience and contributions to these efforts.
“I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world. It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” he stated.
President Biden reiterated his commitment to serving the remainder of his term with the same dedication and focus. He emphasized the importance of unity and collective effort in achieving national goals.
“I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can’t do when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America,” he concluded.
As Biden prepares to step down from the 2024 race, the Democratic Party will now look to other potential candidates to continue the administration’s legacy and campaign for the presidency. Biden’s decision opens the field for new leadership within the party as they aim to build on the achievements of his administration.
