MP Hawa Koomson Claims NDC Plot to Kill Her Son

Calls for Justice Amidst Rising Political Tensions

by Adenike Adeodun

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, reported a plot by some National Democratic Congress (NDC) members to assassinate her son, Ato Koomson. She disclosed this during a Peace Talk event aimed at resolving disputes between the NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency at the Kasoa Odikro Palace.

Koomson said she had informed the police about the plot days before her son was stabbed. “The day I heard about the plot, the person who informed me identified the one behind it. I reported the matter to the police and informed the Crime Officer,” she said.

Despite her efforts, Ato Koomson was stabbed in the chest during a recent voter transfer exercise. She recounted the events leading to the stabbing, emphasizing that the attack’s main objective was to eliminate her son.

“Right in front of the NDC constituency organizer, someone slapped my son. He responded because he is a man. I taught him not to cower but to retaliate. After the slap, the person who plotted to shoot him came and stabbed him in the right chest,” Koomson stated.

She stressed that while she cannot forgive the attackers, she has left the matter to the police for investigation and prosecution. The suspect, an NDC ward organizer, was arrested and is assisting with investigations.

The NDC has defended the suspect, claiming he was protecting himself from being lynched by Koomson’s supporters. This incident highlights the ongoing tension in the Awutu Senya East constituency, which has a history of violence during elections.

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, security officials have designated Awutu Senya East as a hotspot. The peace talk, facilitated by local chiefs, aimed to foster harmony between the NPP and NDC in the constituency.

“The Peace Talk was essential,” said a local chief. “We must ensure a peaceful election season.”

Koomson’s revelations at the Peace Talk event underscore the volatility in the constituency. “Despite my commitment to peace and my efforts to ensure my son’s safety, the NDC still attacked him,” she said.

The police have assured a thorough investigation. “We are taking this matter seriously,” a police spokesperson said. “Justice will be served.”

The Peace Talk event aimed to bridge the gap between the two major political parties. The chiefs emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence and urged both parties to work together for the community’s benefit.

“The chiefs’ involvement is crucial,” said a political analyst. “Their influence can help reduce tensions.”

As the 2024 elections approach, the political climate in Awutu Senya East remains tense. Both the NDC and NPP are urged to prioritize peace to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“We need to focus on development, not violence,” said a local resident. “Our community deserves better.”

Koomson remains resolute. “I will continue to fight for justice,” she said. “My son’s life was put at risk, and we must ensure this never happens again.”

The police continue to investigate the incident, and the community watches closely. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for handling political violence in the area.
