Private Legal Practitioner Triumphs to Replace Napo

Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, a private legal practitioner, emerged victorious in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primary for Manhyia South. The primary, held on Sunday, July 14, 2024, saw Baffour Awuah securing a commanding 376 votes.

Competitive Race and Results

Baffour Awuah outpaced his closest rival, Nana Owusu Prempeh, the brother of the outgoing Member of Parliament Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who garnered 141 votes. Other contenders in the race included James Owusu, who received seven votes, and Akwasi Coker Gyambibi, who managed only one vote. Initially, six aspirants picked up nomination forms when nominations opened on Monday, July 8. However, by the close of nominations on Tuesday, July 9, only four candidates had submitted their documents. Kwadwo Amankwaah Antwi and Abdul Rahman Diallo were unable to complete their submissions.

The primary was held following the unanimous endorsement of the sitting MP, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections. This endorsement necessitated the need for a new candidate to represent the NPP in Manhyia South, paving the way for the recent primary.
