Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana and Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a strong appeal to the residents of Northern Ghana, to secure his bid for presidency. He presented a case that he has championed development in the region more effectively than his main competitor, former President John Dramani Mahama.
During a courtesy visit to the Paramount Chief of Chereponi in the North East region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his achievements in development despite never having served as President. He pointed out that his efforts as Vice President have resulted in significant advancements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and energy within the northern territories—areas where he claims to have outperformed Mahama.
Dr. Bawumia articulated the constitutional dynamics that place all executive powers in the hands of the president, contrasting his role and influence as Vice President. “As you know, per the constitution of Ghana, all the powers are vested in the president. I am Vice President. I have not been President before unlike John Mahama, but I have assisted in bringing more development to Chereponi and the north than Mahama. It is therefore in the interest of the region to elect me as the president and not Mahama,” he argued during the meeting.
The Vice President reassured the local leaders and community members of his commitment to the North’s development. He highlighted recent approvals for extending rural electrification projects and the upcoming establishment of a nursing training school, with expected completion by year’s end. These initiatives, according to Bawumia, demonstrate his dedication to enhancing the quality of life and accessibility of essential services in the region.
Dr. Bawumia also took this opportunity to outline his vision for the whole country, stating that the development of the north and Ghana as a whole remains his top priority. He promised to deliver accelerated, holistic, and transformational leadership with the support of all Ghanaians.
This visit is part of Dr. Bawumia’s broader constituency-focused campaign, which is currently in its second day in the North East Region. His itinerary includes stops in the Chereponi, Saboba, and Mion Constituencies, where he is expected to further elaborate on his policies and initiatives aimed at boosting regional development.
