The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called for the immediate resignation of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Ghana’s Vice Presidential candidate and Energy Minister. In a statement, the CPP urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to withdraw Dr. Prempeh from his role if he does not resign within 24 hours.
The CPP stressed the need for Dr. Prempeh to resign for the sake of the country’s image. The party also demanded an immediate apology and retraction from him. If these actions are not taken, the CPP warned they would protest to show their displeasure.
The CPP’s statement emphasized the importance of maintaining the country’s political and economic stability. They called on President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to act swiftly. The party believes failure to do so could lead to significant electoral consequences for the current government.
Dr. Prempeh has faced backlash for his recent comments about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. During an unveiling event in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, he claimed no president since 1957 has developed Ghana more than President Akufo-Addo. These remarks sparked outrage among many Ghanaians and Nkrumaists worldwide.
In his speech, Dr. Prempeh stated, “If the history of Ghana is told from 1957, we have never had a president that has helped Ghana more than Nana Akufo-Addo. I mean from 1957, even including your Kwame Nkrumah, none of them has protected Ghana and developed the country more than Nana Akufo-Addo.”
The CPP’s response highlights the deep respect many Ghanaians hold for Dr. Nkrumah, the nation’s founding father. They argue that Dr. Prempeh’s comments were not only disrespectful but also historically inaccurate.
The CPP has called on the government to heed the voice of the people and take appropriate action. They believe that failing to address this issue could worsen the government’s predicted electoral defeat. The party’s statement concluded with a warning, citing an old saying: “One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.”
Dr. Prempeh’s comments have stirred significant controversy, and the CPP’s demands reflect widespread dissatisfaction. As the situation unfolds, many Ghanaians are watching closely to see how the government will respond to these calls for resignation and accountability.
The CPP’s stance underscores the importance of respectful political discourse and the need for leaders to acknowledge the contributions of past presidents. The party’s call for action is a clear indication of the high stakes involved in maintaining political integrity and public trust in Ghana.
