Accra Gears Up for Massive Clean-Up Exercise Led by Ga Mantse

Environmental Initiative Aims for Cleaner, Greener Capital

by Victor Adetimilehin

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has launched a one-month clean-up campaign in Ghana’s capital, Accra, in a bid to tackle persistent sanitation issues and promote a culture of environmental responsibility. The initiative, dubbed “Let’s Keep Accra Clean,” is a collaborative effort between the Ga Traditional Council (GTC) and various government agencies.

The campaign kicks off on July 2nd with a city-wide clean-up exercise, with all shops and businesses in designated areas expected to close their doors for the day. This move underscores the importance the organizers place on community participation in achieving a cleaner Accra.

Multi-Faceted Approach to Environmental Sustainability

The “Let’s Keep Accra Clean” campaign goes beyond a one-day clean-up effort. It encompasses several key components designed to ensure long-term environmental progress. These include:

  • Household registration for organized waste collection services: This will streamline waste management and ensure residents have access to proper disposal methods.
  • Education on waste management techniques: Equipping residents with the knowledge and skills to manage waste effectively is crucial for long-term success. Educational campaigns will focus on proper waste segregation, composting techniques, and responsible recycling practices.
  • Enforcement of sanitation bye-laws: The campaign will see a renewed focus on enforcing existing regulations to deter littering and other sanitation offenses. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will work closely with Environmental Health Officers to ensure compliance with sanitation bye-laws.
  • Sanitation competitions: To foster a spirit of friendly competition and community pride, schools, communities, markets, and lorry stations will compete for the title of “cleanest.”
  • Collaboration with corporate institutions: The Ga Mantse urged businesses to embrace sustainable practices and prioritize environmental well-being in their operations.

The Accra Mayor, Elizabeth K.T. Sackey, echoed the Ga Mantse’s sentiments regarding the importance of a clean environment. She emphasized the link between sanitation and public safety and security, highlighting the health risks associated with poor sanitation and the negative impact it can have on tourism and economic development.

The “Let’s Keep Accra Clean” campaign is more than just a clean-up exercise; it’s an attempt to instill a lasting change in attitudes and behaviors. By promoting education, fostering community participation, and offering incentives for responsible waste management, the initiative aims to build a culture of environmental stewardship in Accra.
