In a recent survey conducted by the National Investigation Bureau, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, currently serving as the Minister of Energy, has emerged as the leading choice among members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to become the running mate to the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia. This finding comes as the 2024 general elections are rapidly approaching, bringing critical decisions to the forefront of party strategy.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known for his charismatic leadership, garnered an impressive 76.2% of the total votes from a wide array of party executives who participated in the survey. These executives spanned various levels, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station leaders, totaling 5,116 delegates nationwide.

Lagging significantly behind in preference was Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, who received 10.16% of the vote. Other notable figures considered in the survey were Apostle Opoku Onyinah, a respected former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the current Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.

The survey also highlighted a strong regional preference for the running mate selection. An overwhelming 84% of respondents advocated for the choice to come from the Ashanti Region, viewing it as a strategic move to consolidate party strength in a key area. Dr. Opoku Prempeh, hailing from this region, fits this criterion, enhancing his appeal among the party faithful.

Despite his popularity, the National Investigation Bureau’s report contained a note of caution regarding Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s candidacy. It pointed out the challenges he faces as Minister of Energy, particularly with the ongoing power crises in Ghana. The report suggested that these issues might affect his vice-presidential candidacy unless significant improvements are seen in his management of the energy sector. This improvement is deemed necessary to boost the NPP’s chances in the upcoming elections.

This survey reflects a critical moment for the NPP as they strategize for the 2024 general elections, considering not just the popularity of potential candidates but also their regional influence and portfolio performance. The choice of a running mate is very important, as it could sway public opinion and affect the party’s overall performance at the polls.
