Bawumia Calls for Policy Focus in Upcoming Elections

Elections Should Center on Policies, Not Religious Differences, Says VP

by Victor Adetimilehin

During the Eid ul-Adha celebrations held at Accra’s Black Star Square, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia addressed a congregation, emphasizing the need for the forthcoming December elections to focus on policies rather than religious differences. He highlighted how Ghana’s status as one of the most peaceful countries in Africa is largely due to its religious tolerance.

Unity Through Diversity

In his speech, Dr. Bawumia urged both political leaders and citizens to prioritize national unity and focus on substantive policy issues that will drive the country forward. “We live as Muslims and Christians in harmony. We are one people, we are one nation, and our elections should reflect our collective dedication to enhancing Ghana through focused policy discussion,” Dr. Bawumia stated. He stressed that the elections should be about the ideas, solutions, and policies that the candidates propose for the future of Ghana, rather than their religious affiliations.

The Vice President linked his message to the significance of Eid ul-Adha, which commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. While no one can match this profound act of faith and sacrifice, Dr. Bawumia called on Ghanaians to draw inspiration from this story and apply it to their civic duties. He said, “Just as Prophet Ibrahim was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, we must also be willing to sacrifice for the betterment of our communities and our nation.”

Dr. Bawumia also outlined the government’s commitment to tackling the challenges faced by Ghanaians, particularly in sectors crucial for national development like education, health, and infrastructure. He highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance the economy and quality of life for all Ghanaians, including significant investments in STEM education and the free Senior High School (SHS) program, which has increased student enrollment dramatically.

Support for Zongo Communities

Further addressing national development, the Vice President mentioned the impact of the Zongo Development Fund, which has been pivotal in supporting infrastructure and human development in many Zongo communities. This includes improvements in schools, bridges, water systems, and health facilities, alongside providing numerous opportunities for skills training and education.

Concluding his address, Dr. Bawumia called for a peaceful election process, reflecting the national ethos of unity and cooperation. He reiterated the need for the Electoral Commission and all political entities to operate with transparency, fairness, and impartiality to ensure credible elections.

The National Chief Imam, Sheik Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, also spoke at the event, expressing gratitude for the continuous support from the government and emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and unity among all Ghanaians regardless of political or religious differences.
