Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), will start a three-day campaign tour in the Ashanti region on Monday, June 10, 2024.
Rumors in Kumasi suggest that Bawumia may name Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, as his running mate during this tour. The Ashanti region is a key stronghold for the NPP, making this announcement highly anticipated.
Bawumia’s campaign program begins with a meeting of the party’s Ashanti regional executive at True Vine Hotel. Attendees will include government appointees, members of parliament, the regional council of elders, the council of patrons, and other party officials. This meeting will start at 8 a.m.
At 10 a.m., Bawumia will meet paramount chiefs and queen mothers at the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs secretariat in Kumasi. He plans to present his vision to them ahead of his campaign manifesto launch for the general elections.
Following the meeting with traditional leaders, Bawumia will engage with the clergy at McKeown Temple. He will then meet Muslim leaders at the Kumasi Central Mosque at 1:30 p.m.
In the afternoon, Bawumia will visit Central Market to meet and greet traders. This interaction is scheduled for around 3 p.m., allowing him to connect with the grassroots supporters.
Bawumia will conclude the first day of his campaign activities with a meeting at True Vine Hotel. He will engage with various professional bodies, including the Ghana Medical Association, Ghana Bar Association, Ghana Journalist Association, University Teachers Association of Ghana, Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers, Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana Institute of Architects, Ghana Institute of Engineers, Ghana Institute of Surveyors, Ghana Association for Medical Physics, Nurses and Midwifery Association, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana.
Bawumia’s campaign tour emphasizes his vision for the nation and aims to unite party members and supporters. By engaging with diverse groups, from party executives to market traders and professional bodies, he seeks to build a broad coalition of support.
The potential announcement of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate could significantly impact the NPP’s campaign dynamics. Prempeh’s selection would bring substantial experience and regional support, strengthening the party’s position in the Ashanti region.
As Bawumia embarks on this crucial campaign tour, his interactions and announcements will be closely watched. The Ashanti region’s significance to the NPP makes this tour pivotal for the party’s electoral strategy.
