The Abokobi Health Centre, located in the Ga East Municipality of Ghana, is in dire need of infrastructure and equipment improvements to serve the growing population in the area.

That was the message of Sarah Adwoa Safo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, who visited the facility on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

She donated 22 medical equipment items worth GH₵200,000 to the Ga East Municipal Health Directorate, with the aim of benefiting the Abokobi Health Centre and other health facilities in the municipality.

According to a report by Daily Graphic, the donated equipment included essential items such as baby weighing scales, suction machines, examination lamps, and diagnostic sets.

A Passionate Appeal

Ms. Safo, a former deputy Majority Leader and Minister of Public Procurement, expressed her passion for improving healthcare in her constituency, citing past initiatives like building the Haatso maternity clinic and donating generators and medical supplies to various facilities.

She also acknowledged the government’s commitment to upgrading the health center, but emphasized the potential for faster progress with support from Corporate Ghana and individuals.

“While the government is working diligently to improve the Abokobi Health Centre, I urge Corporate Ghana and individuals who prioritize the health of Ghanaians to consider aiding the facility,” Ms. Safo stated.

A Plea for More Support

The Ga East Municipal Director of Health Service, Dr. Selorm Kutsoati, expressed gratitude for the donation and affirmed its efficient distribution and use. He also extended a plea for further support, requesting a dental chair for Abokobi and assistance with expanding the facility to facilitate the desired upgrade to a Polyclinic.

He said the health center currently serves about 30,000 people, but has the potential to serve more than 100,000 people if it becomes a polyclinic.

He also said the health center faces challenges such as inadequate staff, lack of ambulance service, and frequent power outages.

Despite the challenges, the health center has been providing quality healthcare to the people of Abokobi and its environs, with services such as antenatal care, family planning, immunization, and laboratory tests.

The health center also has a vision to become a center of excellence in maternal and child health, and to reduce the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases in the municipality.

With the donation from Ms. Safo and the appeal for more support, the health center hopes to achieve its vision and to improve the health and well-being of the people it serves.
