John Mahama’s Struggle for a Running Mate Sparks NDC Focus Debate

by Victor Adetimilehin

Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama is facing mounting pressure as he seeks a running mate for his political comeback. Awal Mohammed, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, has accused Mahama and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of lacking focus and direction in their political endeavors.

Awal Mohammed’s criticism comes amid an ongoing debate over the NDC’s ability to establish itself as a formidable opposition party in Ghana’s political landscape. He contends that instead of presenting a strong alternative vision, the NDC appears preoccupied with what he views as irrelevant political activities.

During a recent discussion on Peace FM, Awal Mohammed remarked, “When you have an opposition that doesn’t have anything to say, this is what you get. It has been over six to seven months since the NDC elected former President Mahama, and he is still struggling to appoint a running mate.”

The impasse regarding Mahama’s running mate nomination is only one facet of the broader political tension in Ghana. The discord was exacerbated by recent statements from Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, who declared that he lacks sufficient evidence to prosecute party and government officials accused of involvement in illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

The allegations stemmed from a report authored by former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, in March 2021. However, the Attorney General asserted that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng failed to substantiate the claims made in his report.

In response, the NDC has strongly criticized the Attorney General, accusing him of dishonesty in his assessment of the report and demanding his immediate resignation. This controversy has added fuel to the ongoing political rivalry between the NPP and the NDC, further deepening divisions in the nation’s political landscape.

As Ghana prepares for crucial political events, including presidential elections, the rift between the two major parties underscores the importance of fostering constructive political discourse and prioritizing the nation’s best interests over partisan interests.

Amidst the political challenges and debates, Ghanaians are hoping for a resolution that promotes unity and cooperation among political leaders. The nation’s strength lies in its ability to come together, overcome differences, and chart a path toward a brighter future for all.
