Theresa Aba Kufuor, the former First Lady, will be laid to rest in Kumasi on November 19, 2023. The final funeral rites will commence at the state house forecourt on November 16, 2023.

Papa Kofi Mensah, the family’s spokesperson, revealed these arrangements during a visit to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, to formally inform him of her passing and discuss the funeral schedule.

The delegation, led by Nana Amoah Gyawu Buahin, the Awua Domase Akyempemhene, included the deceased’s sons, Chief Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor, Kofi Kufuor, as well as daughters Nana Ama Kufuor and Nana Saa Kufuor, former diplomat Ambassador D. K. Osei, spokesperson Papa Kofi Mensah, and nephew Kojo Mensah.

Papa Kofi Mensah conveyed the family’s profound sadness at the passing of Theresa Aba Kufuor, who left this world on October 1, 2023, at Peduase. The family plans to observe the one-week memorial at the residence of former President Kufuor at Peduase on October 11, 2023.

The funeral proceedings will begin in Accra on November 16 and culminate in Kumasi on November 19, 2023, where Theresa Aba Kufuor will be laid to rest, followed by a thanksgiving mass in her honor.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed his condolences to the family and paid tribute to the late First Lady, highlighting her exceptional personality and exemplary life. He reminisced about his long-standing relations with the Kufuor family and their meeting in Oxford, England, over five decades ago in 1962.

He assured the family of a dignified state burial, acknowledging her as a fine and dignified woman deserving of such honor. Flags were flown at half-mast last week in her memory, a tribute that will be repeated on the day of the funeral.

Theresa Aba Kufuor, who dedicated herself to former President Kufuor throughout their 61 years of marriage, was a retired nurse and midwife. Born on October 25, 1935, she passed away at the age of 87 on October 1, 2023. Her working life was primarily in the United Kingdom, where she qualified as a state-certified midwife with expertise in premature nursing.

As the last-born child of her parents, Theresa Aba Kufuor’s legacy will endure through the lives she touched and the impact she made throughout her life.

In honor of Theresa Kufuor, her final journey will be a testament to the love and respect she inspired in her lifetime. As the nation gathers to bid her farewell, her memory will serve as a reminder of the enduring power of compassion and service.
