President Akufo-Addo unveils St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital.

by Adenike Adeodun

Accra’s newly inaugurated St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital (SMSH) sets the bar high for premium healthcare delivery in Ghana. Situated at Abeka Lapaz, this 90-bed facility offers a blend of high-quality healthcare and luxury.

SMSH is more than just another hospital; it envisions becoming West Africa’s healthcare beacon. The hospital covers a broad spectrum of medical services, from general outpatient consultations to specialist care like cardiac and hemodialysis. Additionally, it houses state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities, including CT scanning, X-rays, general ultrasound, and comprehensive laboratory services.

During the inauguration, Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emphasised the facility’s role in the nation’s healthcare development. He highlighted his aspiration to position Ghana as a premier medical hub in the West African sub-region by 2030. “To make this vision a reality,” he said, “we’re channelling more investments into healthcare infrastructure, elevating our regional health facilities, and ensuring selected hospitals meet world-class standards.”

According to a report by Graphic Online, President Akufo-Addo further highlighted the crucial importance of healthcare accessibility. Notably, he mentioned that since 2017, the government has employed 58,041 health workers, marking a historic recruitment number during the pandemic.

The Ghana Ambulance Service now boasts 307 ambulances, ensuring each constituency is covered. Additionally, the government has fortified the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and initiated drone services for remote medical supply deliveries.

The president lauded the hospital’s board chairman, Michael Banahene, for encouraging Ghanaians to persevere and contribute positively to national growth. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor praised Banahene, his grandnephew, for realising his vision. He expressed joy over the young generation’s inspiring efforts.

Dr. Lawrence Sereboe, SMSH’s Medical Director, asserted that the hospital’s advanced investment equips it to match or even surpass international standards. He concluded by emphasising the facility’s dedication to top-tier maintenance standards for all its equipment.
