Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia faced another challenging moment as some residents of Teshie in Accra showed their discontent during the unveiling of a newly constructed artificial pitch in the area. The facility, a collaborative effort between the former Member of Parliament of Ledzokuku, Bernard Okoe-Boye, and the Ghana Gas Company, was officially launched on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was invited as the guest of honour at the event, encountered a hostile reception as his arrival at the event’s grounds was met with disapproval and jeers from the crowd. A video circulating on social media captures a host of spectators chanting against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Among the chants was a particular song which translates as “Nana Akuffo Addo, we are dying, but have you seen your bald head, we will slap on it.”
The vice president’s booing follows in the step of numerous similar incidents on high-ranking members of the Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration. In recent months, the president himself has been booed by angry citizens at various gatherings for incompetence and mismanagement. The public dissatisfaction stems from the economic hardships, rising cost of living, corruption scandals, and poor delivery of public services that have plagued the country under the current government.
The vice president, who is seeking to lead the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 elections, has been criticised for making unrealistic promises and claims about the government’s achievements. He has also been accused of being out of touch with the realities on the ground and the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian. His opponents have challenged him to provide evidence for his assertions and to address the pressing issues facing the nation.
The Astro-turfs are one of a number of ways the government believes it is solving the infrastructure issues that have plagued the sporting sector. The Ghana National Petroleum Commission and Ghana Gas Company have been at the forefront of the Astro-turf construction. However, some critics have questioned the sustainability and quality of the projects, as well as the transparency and accountability of the processes involved.
Despite the negative reactions, the vice president has maintained his optimism and confidence in the government’s vision and agenda. He has urged the people to support the government’s efforts and to appreciate the positive impact of its policies and programmes. He has also assured the people that the government is working hard to improve their living standards and to create more opportunities for development.
