The government of Ghana has announced plans to replace outdated fire tenders in the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) fleet.

The new vehicles will enhance firefighting capabilities and emergency response, addressing concerns over the current fleet, some of which are over 15 years old.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak revealed the government’s intention during a Parliament session on March 18, 2025.

The announcement came after rising concerns about the country’s fire preparedness and the difficulties firefighters face with aging equipment.

“The government is actively discussing with the Finance Ministry to secure funds for the new fire tenders. We may include this procurement in the upcoming mid-year budget review,” Muntaka-Mubarak said.

He also shared that as an immediate measure, the GNFS has been instructed to repair faulty fire tenders to increase the number of operational vehicles available for emergency situations.

According to the minister, 48 out of 247 fire appliances are currently out of service, but efforts are underway to repair them at various workshops.

Interim measures in place to support fire services

In addition to repairing existing vehicles, the government is seeking support from private sector organizations and philanthropists to assist the fire service with logistics while waiting for the new equipment.

Muntaka-Mubarak emphasized that these temporary measures would help reduce response times and improve overall efficiency in dealing with fire outbreaks.

Despite the optimism, the minister could not provide a specific date for the procurement of new fire tenders.

According to Graphic Online, he stated that the timeline would depend on the availability of funds, but he reassured Parliament that the government remains committed to improving fire services across the country.

“The GNFS plays a critical role in safeguarding the lives and property of citizens, and we are determined to ensure that they have the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively,” the minister stated.

Government’s focus on improving fire response across Ghana

Muntaka-Mubarak’s comments reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing fire response services and improving safety measures nationwide.

The government’s focus on upgrading the fire service’s capabilities aligns with broader efforts to strengthen public safety and disaster management systems in Ghana.

As discussions continue on the procurement of new fire tenders, Ghanaians are hopeful that the government’s investment will significantly reduce response times and increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations across the country.
