President Mahama appoints new acting service chiefs for GAF

As part of a reorganization initiative meant to fortify the nation’s defense and guarantee ongoing military excellence, President John Mahama has appointed new acting service chiefs for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). This move aims to further strengthen the country’s defense infrastructure while ensuring that the military remains effective and prepared for any future challenges.

President Mahama announces new acting service chiefs

The newly appointed acting service chiefs include Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing as Acting Chief of Naval Staff, Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong as Acting Chief of Air Staff, Brigadier General William Agyapong as Acting Chief of Defense Staff, Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Acting Chief of Army Staff, and Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan as Acting Chief of Staff. These appointments will officially take effect on March 24, 2025.

In accordance with the law, these appointments are pending consultation with the Council of State, which is a required step in the formalization process.

Changes are part of restructuring efforts for GAF

According to Myjoyonline, earlier today, at Flagstaff House, President Mahama met with the outgoing service chiefs, led by Chief of Defense Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah. During the meeting, Mahama expressed his deep appreciation for the outgoing leadership’s dedicated service to the nation. He acknowledged their efforts in strengthening Ghana’s military capabilities and reiterated his confidence in their continued expertise, assuring that he would rely on their counsel to support ongoing national development. A statement from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, conveyed the president’s gratitude to the departing military leaders.

These new appointments reflect the government’s continued commitment to improving the operational efficiency and strategic leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces.
