KEY POINTS

In a sweeping move to assert discipline ahead of the 2024 elections, the Agona West branch of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including its sitting Member of Parliament, Cynthia Morrison.

The expulsion underscores a significant internal rift as the party seeks to fortify its ranks for the upcoming electoral contest.

Internal party crisis unfolds as disciplinary measures tighten

The expelled members, who have been banned indefinitely from participating in any NPP activities, holding leadership roles, or using the party’s symbols, are accused of violating party loyalty.

The sanctions were formalized during an Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting in December 15, 2024, following growing allegations of disloyalty.

The expulsion, as reported by JoyOnline, is effective December 16, and sends a clear signal of the party’s zero-tolerance approach to indiscipline, particularly as the NPP prepares for the high-stakes 2024 elections.

According to Constituency Chairman Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the action was triggered by accusations that the individuals ran as independents or supported rival political factions during recent parliamentary races, breaching the party’s constitutional expectations of loyalty and unity.

NPP sends strong message as election campaign heats up

The decisive move emphasizes the NPP’s commitment to maintaining internal cohesion, with the disciplinary crackdown aimed at protecting the party’s integrity.

The expulsions, which reflect the party’s firm stance on loyalty and unity, highlight its efforts to prevent any divisions that could undermine its chances in the approaching elections.
