Key Points

  • Nana Akomea defends Kufuor’s endorsement of Bawumia as NPP flagbearer.
  • Akomea criticizes Alan Kyerematen for expecting support after leaving the NPP.
  • Kufuor’s history of supporting Alan is cited to counter Alan’s claims.

Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign Team, has rebuked Alan Kyerematen for his sharp criticism of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Alan took issue with Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, ahead of the December polls.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program on November 19, 2024, Akomea labeled Alan’s remarks as unwarranted, particularly given the pivotal roles Kufuor gave him during his presidency. He argued that Alan had no right to expect an endorsement from Kufuor after severing ties with the NPP to lead his own Movement for Change party.

“You can’t expect Kufuor to endorse you after turning your back on the NPP,” Akomea said. He emphasized that Kufuor’s support for Bawumia aligns with the party’s decision to elect him as its flagbearer.

Akomea highlights Alan’s history with Kufuor

According to a report by Ghana Web, Nana Akomea reminded Alan Kyerematen of the significant political opportunities he received under Kufuor’s leadership. He noted that Kufuor appointed Alan as an ambassador and later as Minister of Trade and Industry, roles others in the party could have filled.

“Kufuor chose Alan for key roles despite other qualified candidates in the party,” Akomea pointed out. He questioned Alan’s reasoning for criticizing Kufuor’s decision to support the NPP’s current candidate.

Akomea also dismissed Alan’s suggestion that Kufuor’s actions tarnish his political legacy, stating, “Kufuor has always acted in the party’s best interest.” He argued that Alan’s departure from the NPP invalidates any expectation for continued loyalty or endorsement.

In a viral video, Alan expressed disappointment in Kufuor, claiming the endorsement damaged his former boss’s reputation. Alan described Kufuor as an elder and an uncle but insisted his actions were inappropriate.

The controversy highlights the tensions surrounding the NPP’s internal politics as the December elections draw near.
