Ghana National Gas Company Limited (GNGCL) has saved more than $250 million since 2017 by exclusively employing Ghanaian engineers and technicians to operate its gas processing plant.
GNGCL’s cost-saving initiative began in April 2017 when the company assumed operational control from the Chinese firm Sinopec.
According to Chief Executive Officer Ben K.D. Asante, the move has resulted in monthly savings of $3 million. Dr. Asante shared the details Sunday during a ministerial press briefing in Accra.
Operational excellence and safety milestones
Currently employing about 1,000 Ghanaians in permanent and contract roles, the company has successfully completed critical projects under local leadership.
These include three major maintenance shutdowns and managing onshore pipeline integrity.
Dr. Asante said the initiative demonstrates the capability of Ghanaian professionals, stating, “The takeover by Ghanaian engineers shows we can excel when given the opportunity.”
Ghana Gas has also earned ISO 45001 certification, a global standard for occupational health, safety, and environmental management.
The company has maintained an impeccable safety record, with no reported lost-time injuries.
Boosting energy supply and local communities
Ghana Gas plays a critical role in Ghana’s energy infrastructure, providing 80% of the natural gas required for thermal power generation and meeting 50% of the country’s domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) needs.
Additionally, the company has completed more than 400 corporate social responsibility projects in education, healthcare, water and sanitation, and sports infrastructure across all 16 regions. Over 80 more projects are ongoing.

The shift to local engineers is part of Ghana Gas’s indigenization strategy, designed to reduce reliance on foreign expertise, foster skills development, and contribute to job creation.
“We are proud to empower Ghanaians to lead critical operations while delivering cost savings and maintaining world-class standards,” Dr. Asante said.
