KEY POINTS

  • Mahama sees the vacant seats as a divine sign of an NDC victory in the 2024 elections.
  • The Speaker’s ruling shifts the balance of Parliament toward the NDC, creating optimism for Mahama.
  • Mahama views the NDC’s newfound majority as a promising sign for Ghana’s political future.

Following Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s announcement that four parliamentary seats were up for grabs, former President John Mahama has voiced optimism.

Speaker’s ruling shifts Parliament’s balance toward NDC majority

Ahead of the general elections in 2024, Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), sees the decision favourably.

After former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu submitted a request to declare the seats vacant, the Speaker decided. In the forthcoming election, the four members of parliament had decided to run as independents. Bagbin shifted Ghana’s previously hung parliament in favour of the opposition NDC on Thursday, October 17, when he announced that three seats were vacant. Andrew Amoako Asiamah, an independent MP, had helped the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) hold onto a slim majority.

According to a report by MyJoyOnline, Mahama responded by calling it historic and expressing hope for the NDC’s future. In the run-up to the general elections on December 7, he claimed the new majority position in Parliament is encouraging.

Mahama sees divine sign in NDC’s political fortunes

The NDC has already taken the majority before we have even cast a ballot, thus in my opinion, God is even revealing what will happen, Mahama stated.

Mahama did, however, warn that the party needs to perform well in the elections to strengthen its position. “The Ghanaian people will vote at that time, and I am confident that December 7, 2024, will be a historic occasion that alters the trajectory of Ghana’s history,” he continued.

Mahama reflected on his campaign, saying that he had reached out to people in ten different regions and that the message was unmistakable: “Ghana needs change.” He restated that the NDC had secured a legislative majority in the 2020 elections, but asserted that the NPP had obtained four seats by deception.

Despite these setbacks, the NDC has restored its majority in Parliament ahead of the 2024 elections, Mahama stated, adding that “God works in mysterious ways.” “I do not doubt that the NDC will win in 2024,” he said, expressing confidence in the party’s prospects.
