Cantonments Road in Accra to Face Two-Month Traffic Disruption

Motorists Advised to Plan Alternative Routes, Expect Delays

by Victor Adetimilehin

Drivers in Ghana’s capital, Accra, need to be aware of an upcoming traffic disruption on Cantonments Road. The Department of Urban Roads, under the Ministry of Roads and Highways, announced the project on May 24th, 2024. The disruption is scheduled to begin on Sunday, May 26th, and last for two months, concluding on Monday, July 29th, 2024.

The affected stretch of road lies between the Cantonments Police Station and Danquah Circle, a busy area that includes the Police Hospital. This project is a collaborative effort between the International Hospitals Group Ltd (IHG) and the Ministry of the Interior.

Enhancing Drainage and Pedestrian Safety Around Police Hospital

The primary goals of this initiative are to improve the drainage system and enhance pedestrian safety in the vicinity of the Police Hospital. Better drainage will help mitigate the risk of flooding during heavy rains, a common issue in Accra. This will not only benefit the hospital’s patients and staff but also improve overall safety and accessibility for pedestrians in the surrounding area.

Improved pedestrian safety measures could include designated crosswalks, better signage, and potentially even lowered speed limits. These changes would make it safer for people walking to and from the hospital, particularly those with disabilities or young children.

Motorists planning to travel on Cantonments Road during this period are strongly advised to plan ahead and allow for additional travel time. Traffic management signs will be strategically placed along the route to guide drivers through the disruption. The Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will also deploy officers at key intersections to manage traffic flow and minimize congestion.

Alternative Routes and Real-time Updates

While official detours may not be announced, drivers can explore alternative routes based on their origin and destination. Consulting online map services and traffic navigation apps can be helpful in finding the least congested routes during the disruption.

The Department of Urban Roads encourages drivers to stay informed by following their official communication channels for any updates or changes to the project timeline.

This project on Cantonments Road highlights the ongoing need for infrastructure improvements in Accra. While the disruption may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits of a more efficient drainage system and enhanced pedestrian safety are significant.

This initiative can serve as a model for future infrastructure projects in Accra, prioritizing both functionality and safety for all road users. It’s crucial to address these infrastructure challenges to ensure a smoother flow of traffic, improved accessibility for pedestrians, and a safer environment for everyone in the city.

Collaboration for a Safer, More Efficient Accra

The collaboration between the Department of Urban Roads, the Ministry of the Interior, and the International Hospitals Group demonstrates a commitment to improving Accra’s infrastructure. This type of partnership can be replicated for future projects, ensuring a coordinated and comprehensive approach to urban development.

By prioritizing drainage improvements, pedestrian safety, and efficient traffic management, authorities can work towards creating a more livable and user-friendly city for residents and visitors alike.
