Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, delivered a powerful message at the 2024 Suma Akwantu Kesie Festival, urging Ghanaians to strengthen national unity and uphold the rule of law. Themed “Culture for Development,” the festival served as a platform for Bagbin to emphasize the importance of Ghana’s cultural heritage in shaping the nation’s future.
Building a Stronger Ghana
Bagbin highlighted the collective wisdom and ingenuity of Ghanaians as the key to overcoming challenges and forging a future defined by peace, prosperity, and inclusivity. He emphasized, “Together, we can conquer any obstacle and emerge stronger, more united, and more resilient than ever before.”
The Speaker underscored the importance of cultural identity, stating that traditions, customs, and values serve as the foundation for a shared identity and pave the way for sustainable development. He pointed to the recent passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill by Parliament as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to its core values.
Bagbin expressed his unwavering support for the Bill, describing it as a reflection of shared values and a crucial step in safeguarding Ghana’s moral fabric. He argued that the Bill protects against “external influences and colonial manipulation.” The Speaker urged Ghanaians to defend their traditional values and norms, preserving the dignity and sanctity of both Ghanaian and African identity.
Traditional Leaders Applauded
Bagbin commended traditional leaders for their unwavering advocacy in preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage. He lauded the Suma Traditional Council’s leadership in transforming the festival into a catalyst for development within the region. The Council’s initiative to establish a state-of-the-art social center in honor of the late Nana Kwadwo Adinkra, the inventor of the Adinkra symbols, was also praised by the Speaker. Bagbin described the Adinkra Centre as “a beacon of hope and opportunity” that will provide invaluable resources for youth training, cultural education, and socio-economic empowerment.
The Speaker concluded his address with a call to action, urging the people of Suma to rally behind their leaders and work towards the development of their area. This message of unity and collaboration resonated strongly with the audience, leaving a sense of optimism for the future of Ghana.
