by Victor Adetimilehin

Accra witnesses the commencement of an ambitious project as Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo breaks ground for a $14 million multipurpose building that will house the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL). The four-story structure and its accompanying facilities will include a 1,500-seat auditorium, approximately 50 lecture rooms ranging from 1,000-seat to 16-seat capacity, two 750-seat moot courts, 100 offices, a 500-seat library, a gymnasium, clinic, cafeteria, baby bay, bookshop, and a rooftop bar, among other amenities.

Notable attendees at the event in Accra, which also marked the launch of the 2023 UGSoL alumni homecoming, included Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, Deputy Attorney-General; Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana; Justice Prof. Nii Ashie Kotey, retired Supreme Court Justice and former Dean of UGSoL; Prof. George Akilagpa Sawyerr, former Vice-Chancellor of UG; Yaw Acheampong Boafo, President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA); and Prof. Raymond A. Atuguba, Dean of UGSoL.

Justice Torkornoo hailed the project as a visionary innovation, one that has the potential to rival top-rated law schools worldwide. She emphasized that quality legal education, underpinned by standard facilities and tutoring, plays a vital role in shaping the quality of law practice and, ultimately, the rule of law. She called upon faculties of law, legal education stakeholders, and institutions involved in the law-making and implementation processes, including Parliament, to prioritize investments in quality legal education for the nation’s benefit.

Alfred Tuah-Yeboah commended UGSoL for its evolution and its contribution to the changing landscape of legal education, especially through the introduction of Graduate Law programs accessible not only to law graduates but also to those from various disciplines looking to expand their legal knowledge. He emphasized that the University of Ghana School of Law sets the standard for law faculties in the country and deserves a fitting structure to continue its excellent work.

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo highlighted the new UGSoL complex’s potential as a hub for innovation and scholarship in the legal profession. She appealed to UGSoL alumni and partners to support the project with resources to ensure its timely completion.

Prof. Atuguba expressed gratitude to faculty members, former deans, staff, and alumni of UGSoL for their significant contributions, which enabled the project’s commencement.

The construction of this state-of-the-art multipurpose building for the University of Ghana School of Law represents a significant step toward enhancing legal education in Ghana. It will provide students and faculty with world-class facilities, fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence, research, and legal practice. As the project progresses, it holds the promise of elevating legal education in the region.
