Health Ministry to Craft Policy Curbing Medical Staff Migration

by Adenike Adeodun

Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu revealed that Ghana’s Health Ministry is set to enhance protocols for training and managing health professionals. This strategy aims to optimize the workforce to meet national and global needs, promising both financial and intellectual returns from international assignments.

Addressing attendees at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s (PCG) annual review, Agyeman-Manu outlined plans for beneficial bilateral health professional deployment. Under the banner “Jesus Christ, the Alpha, and the Omega: Spreading the Gospel through impactful social services,” the gathering saw distinguished church leaders like Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye and Rev. Dr. Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor.

Agyeman-Manu affirmed the policy’s response to these challenges by highlighting the strain of global migration on health services. Steps include enhancing training and ensuring the retention of skilled personnel.

According to a report by Graphic Online, the minister acknowledged PCG’s significant contributions to Ghana’s social progress, particularly in health. He recognized the church’s widespread facilities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to collaborative growth with religious entities.

Outgoing PCG Moderator, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, praised the partnership, citing the upgrade of Kom Presbyterian Clinic to a district hospital as a notable achievement. He reviewed PCG’s mission work, emphasizing preaching, teaching, and healing in their 195-year history.

Mante detailed PCG’s expansive health network in the West African region, reaffirming the church’s holistic mission. Meanwhile, the Christian Health Association of Ghana Executive Director, Dr. Peter K. Yeboah lauded PCG as a top health service contributor nationally.

Rebecca Teiko Sabah, PCG’s Social Services Director, spoke on the event’s focus: assessing past activities and strategizing for modernization in the health and agricultural sectors. The assembly, she stated, would formulate policies reflecting contemporary best practices, benefiting local communities.
