Ghanaian presidential hopeful Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has warned that the deepening monetisation of politics is eroding the values of sacrifice and service that once shaped the nation’s democratic tradition.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart said the trend has shifted politics from a place of integrity to one defined by money, a development he believes must be reversed for Ghana to progress.
Monetisation of politics erodes Ghana’s tradition
Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Agyepong said Ghana’s political culture was built on the sacrifices of leaders such as Adu Boahen, R.R. Amposah, J.A. Addison and others, who served without seeking material gain.
He lamented that this spirit of volunteerism and selflessness has virtually disappeared, replaced by transactional politics where financial influence determines loyalty and outcomes.
He insisted that the monetisation of politics is killing the very soul of the country’s democracy, stressing that if elected, he would restore values of service, sacrifice and contentment to leadership.
Monetisation of politics threatens democratic integrity
According to MyJoyOnline, Agyepong, who previously served as press secretary to President John Kufuor, highlighted his personal record in public service as an example of integrity in leadership. He said he never abused his office nor amassed wealth through state resources, noting that public office should be about fulfilment, not riches.
He further argued that politics should inspire young people to view leadership as a platform for service, not personal enrichment. “Money is important, but it should not be the overriding factor to make you happy,” he said. “That spirit of contentment is divine and must be restored.”
As Ghana moves closer to another election season, Agyepong framed his campaign as a call for a “new dawn” where integrity and sacrifice, not money, determine political leadership.
