The Ashanti Kingdom is in mourning following the death of Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III, announced by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on Monday.
The queen mother, who died on August 7 at age 98, had been a central figure in Ashanti tradition since her enthronement in 2017. A one-week observance of her passing will be held on August 21, 2025.
Passing of Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III
Nana Konadu Yiadom III succeeded Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II at the age of 90, becoming the 14th queen mother in the history of the Ashanti Kingdom.
Eight years on the Ashanti throne
During her reign, she upheld cultural traditions while maintaining her role as a guiding presence alongside the Asantehene. She was also his elder sister, deepening her influence within the royal court.
Long legacy of Ashanti queen mothers
Her passing adds her name to a centuries-old lineage that dates back to Nana Nyarko Kusiamoa in 1695. Like her predecessors, Nana Konadu Yiadom III leaves a legacy intertwined with the history and continuity of the Ashanti royal household.
