Military Helicopter Crash: NPP Calls for Unity

KEY POINTS

  • Two Cabinet Ministers and six other people died in the crash.
  • NPP and Minority leaders show their sadness and support for each other.
  • The focus is now on investigation, accountability, and healing the nation.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the tragic military helicopter crash that killed eight people — including two Cabinet Ministers as a “national tragedy” and called on Ghanaians to unite in mourning.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party expressed profound sorrow over the accident and extended condolences to the families of the victims. The incident, which sent shockwaves across the country, is prompting growing demands for transparency and answers from the government.

Military helicopter crash prompts national outcry

The military helicopter crash has drawn emotional responses from across the political aisle. The NPP said the deaths represented “a profound loss to the entire nation they worked to protect and build,” adding that “no words could capture the anguish of the moment.”

The party urged the public to rally behind the bereaved families and lean on unity, prayer, and compassion during what it called “this excruciatingly difficult period.”

The Minority Caucus in Parliament echoed the sentiment, describing the incident as “a national tragedy.” In a separate statement, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin honoured the fallen, saying they had “embarked on the mission with the singular goal of serving the country.”

Crash investigation and accountability demanded

Furthermore the NPP has called for “a thorough, transparent and swift investigation” to determine the cause of the crash, stating that “the dignity of the lives lost demands answers and accountability.”

Afenyo-Markin paid special tribute to the late Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed and Dr. Edward Omane Boamah. He also said their service and sacrifice went beyond politics, with Dr. Boamah remembered for his intellect and dedication as Defence Minister.

Both parties urged the country to honour the victims by strengthening institutions, supporting the Armed Forces, and working collectively for Ghana’s peace and development.

Leaders call for unity after military helicopter crash

However, the tragedy has served as a rare moment of unity in Ghana’s often-divided political scene. From the ruling party to the opposition, the message is clear: the country must come together, not just to mourn, but to ensure that such loss never repeats.
