President John Mahama visited Vice-President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in London as she recovers from illness, extending Mother’s Day greetings during the visit.

The Vice-President is reportedly recovering well and is expected to resume official duties in the coming weeks, according to government sources.

The visit was widely praised by citizens and advocacy groups as a compassionate act and a symbol of unity within the Ghanaian leadership.

President John Dramani Mahama, on Sunday, May 11, 2025, visited Vice-President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in London, where she is currently recovering from an undisclosed illness.

The visit formed part of Mahama’s engagements during a brief diplomatic trip and coincided with his public tribute to Ghanaian mothers on International Mother’s Day.

In a statement released later that day, the president acknowledged the significance of the visit and offered a heartfelt message. “She is taking a deserved rest after recovering from illness and looking forward to resuming her duties soon,” he said, noting that the Vice-President’s health is steadily improving.

Accompanying the President on the visit were Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Minister of Finance, and Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Member of Parliament for Adaklu. The meeting, which was held at a private residence in central London, was described by officials as “warm and reassuring.”

Mahama uses visit to extend Mother’s Day wishes to Ghanaian women

President Mahama used the occasion of Mother’s Day not only to check in on his Vice-President but to extend his appreciation to all Ghanaian mothers for their role in national development. “To her and all Ghanaian mothers, I say Happy Mother’s Day,” he wrote in the statement. “Your love, resilience, and sacrifices hold the nation together.”

Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a distinguished academic and stateswoman, made history as Ghana’s first female Vice-President. She has been a prominent figure in education and gender advocacy in West Africa and continues to play a pivotal role in shaping policy within the current administration.

Her temporary withdrawal from active public duties due to health challenges had drawn concern from citizens, many of whom took to social media to express support and prayers for her recovery.

Ghana Business News reports that Government sources indicate that her return to Ghana is expected in the coming weeks, depending on the final assessment by her medical team in London.

Public reaction to the President’s visit has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the show of solidarity and concern from the country’s top leadership. Civil society groups and women’s advocacy organizations have welcomed the gesture as a reminder of the importance of empathy and human connection in governance.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Information noted, “It’s important for the public to see that our leaders also prioritize the health and well-being of their colleagues. This sends a strong message of unity.”

As Ghana prepares for several upcoming political and economic milestones, the return of Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang is eagerly anticipated. Her recovery is expected to mark the resumption of her role in spearheading educational reforms, youth empowerment initiatives, and regional development programs
