Starting Monday, April 28, 2025, Ghana begins issuing chip-embedded passports, a move that brings enhanced security features and compliance with international standards.
These new passports aim to reduce the risk of forgery while improving the travel experience. Citizens with valid passports do not need to replace them immediately.
What’s changing with the new passports?
The new passports are equipped with a microchip that holds biometric data, including the individual’s photo. This chip enhances security, making the passport more difficult to forge or tamper with.
Additionally, the passport’s design reflects Ghana’s cultural heritage, featuring symbols like “Fawohodie” (Freedom and Independence) and “Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu” (Democracy and Cooperation).
The introduction of these passports ensures that Ghana complies with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
What does this mean for travelers?
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that current passports remain valid until 2030, as per ICAO guidelines. Citizens can continue using their existing passports for travel without issues until they expire.
However, Ghana encourages citizens to switch to the new chip-embedded passport before the 2030 deadline. To apply for the new passport, citizens can visit the official online portal, www.passport.mfa.gov.gh, and expect delivery within 15 working days, with expedited services available for faster processing.
