EOCO Arrests 35 Suspects in Human Trafficking Operation in Oyarifa

KEY POINTS

  • EOCO arrests 35 suspects in human trafficking operation in Oyarifa.
  • Over 200 victims rescued from forced labour and cyber crime.
  • Ongoing screening and repatriation efforts for victims from Nigeria.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) arrested 35 suspected human traffickers in a major operation. The operation targeted a syndicate that lured and exploited over 200 individuals.

The victims, mostly foreigners from vulnerable backgrounds, were housed in Oyarifa, Accra, under false promises. These promises included offers of better life and employment opportunities in Ghana.

EOCO’s Acting Executive Director, Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, said the suspects operated a well-coordinated trafficking network. The network preyed on victims from various regions, including neighbouring West African countries.

Victims lured by false promises

The victims were allegedly deceived with offers of well-paying jobs, education, and improved living conditions. Upon arrival, the victims were confined to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.

Many were subjected to forced labour and exploitation. “They were forced into cyber crimes and cyber crime-related activities,” Dapilah said.

EOCO successfully rescued 219 victims in Oyarifa, where they had been confined. Recovered items included laptops, internet routers, food items, and personal effects believed to be tools for cyber crime operations.

Screening and repatriation efforts underway

According to MyJoyOnline, EOCO began a detailed screening process to distinguish between victims, suspects, adults, and juveniles. The Nigerian High Commission visited EOCO, encouraging full cooperation from victims and suspects.

EOCO anticipates completing the screening within 24 hours. Arrangements are underway to repatriate victims, especially those from Nigeria, and reunite them with their families.

One victim from Nigeria shared his experience, saying he had been confined for over a year. He had been offered one meal a day and was unaware of his involvement in fraud.

EOCO and the CID continue efforts to dismantle criminal networks and protect vulnerable populations.
