Ghanaian police have dismissed viral reports suggesting that the pan-African billionaire businessman, Benedict Peters, was arrested during a dispute at his Accra apartment complex earlier this week.
The incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Mr. Peters and the developers of his residential building regarding access to a private lift connected to his home. Mr. Peters has claimed that his entitlement to the lift has been repeatedly denied.
In response, Mr. Peters staged a peaceful protest by temporarily parking four of his vehicles on the internal road of the complex for two to three hours. Mr. Peters was unarmed and accompanied only by his private, unarmed security personnel.
Misinformation fueled by misinterpreted scene
Contrary to sensational claims circulating on social media, there was no public road blockade, no convoy of 20 vehicles, and no mobilization of armed guards.
National security operatives were called to the scene by the property developers. However, according to sources, Mr. Peters fully cooperated with the officers present.
A senior police official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the situation was a routine traffic issue involving a temporary obstruction and not an arrest with law enforcement. According to the police spokesperson, “At no point was Mr. Benedict Peters arrested or detained.”
Eyewitnesses also confirmed that the situation remained calm and peaceful throughout. They stated that the appearance of uniformed officers led to widespread misinterpretation of the events, sparking rumors of an arrest.
Mr. Peters has expressed his appreciation to the officers for their prompt handling of the situation and reassured his supporters that he was not involved in any legal issues.
Authorities urge the public to rely on verified information
Sources close to Mr. Peters confirmed that he has resumed his business activities without further issues.
The confusion arose from inaccurate reports by early onlookers who misinterpreted the presence of law enforcement. Authorities are urging the public to trust verified sources to prevent the further spread of misinformation.
Mr. Peters remains optimistic that the ongoing issue with lift access will be resolved peacefully with the property developers.
