11 Suspects Arrested for Illegal Mining at Bonsa River

On Monday, April 2, 2025, police in the Western Region of Ghana arrested 11 suspects for engaging in illegal mining activities along the banks of the Bonsa River.

Among the arrested suspects were four Chinese nationals. The arrests were made following a series of intelligence-led operations aimed at tackling illegal mining in the area.

The arrested suspects include Wei Qinwei, Yao Yongji, Nsoh Oto (also known as Agologo), Kwadwo George (also known as Sergio), and Emmanuel Van (also known as Atta), who were caught at a site near Bonsa.

In addition, six more suspectsโ€”Nuang Shichuan, Huang Xinbao, Douglas Ayambilla, Elvis Aborta, Michael Tettey Komlorm, and Ibrahim Daudaโ€”were apprehended at Wassa Agona.

Police Operation Against Illegal Mining

According to the police statement, the arrests came after sustained intelligence-driven operations targeting illegal mining activities. The police confirmed that all suspects are now in custody and will face legal proceedings.

The Western Central Regional Police Command emphasized its commitment to combating crime and ensuring law and order in the region.

The police assured local communities that they will continue their efforts to stop illegal activities like mining and safeguard public security.

Ongoing Fight Against Illegal Mining in Ghana

The illegal mining industry, also known as “Galamsey,” continues to be a significant problem in Ghana, especially in areas like the Western Region.

Illegal mining activities have led to environmental degradation and loss of livelihood for local communities. The authorities have ramped up efforts to tackle this issue, with the police and other government agencies working together to arrest suspects and dismantle illegal mining operations.
