The fallout from the New Patriotic Party’s defeat in the Akwatia by-election has triggered fresh political drama, with the opposition National Democratic Congress insisting that New Juaben South MP Michael Okyere Baafi be held to his word. Rashid Tanko Computer, the NDC’s Deputy National Elections Director, rejected Baafi’s recent apology and vowed to press for either his resignation or a public apology before the full chamber of Parliament.

Tanko Computer told reporters that Baafi’s apology following the NPP’s loss was not enough. “We are not accepting his apology. He must resign. If he doesn’t resign, Ghanaians will not take politicians seriously,” he said. The NDC official argued that public trust in politics rests on accountability and that elected leaders must be bound by their statements.

Tanko Computer recalled that Baafi, who had appeared cheerful during the collation process, suddenly shifted his mood when it became clear the NPP had lost. According to him, Baafi was “beaming with smiles” until he saw the results on Tanko’s phone, at which point he began to sweat.

“The gentleman made a categorical statement: ‘I will resign.’ Let us go and test their strength in that constituency and see whether that is truly an NPP stronghold,” Tanko Computer said. He added that Baafi’s declaration was made openly, and therefore, he must now be held accountable for it.

According to MyJoyOnline, the NDC official stressed that the party would not relent. “If he doesn’t, I will write to the Speaker of Parliament and he must apologise on the floor, so the public can see who he is,” Tanko Computer said. He further argued that politicians must show integrity to restore faith in Ghana’s democracy. “People like him must allow decency in our politics so that Ghanaians will respect us,” he added.

The clash underscores how electoral outcomes continue to reshape Ghana’s political landscape, with parties seizing opportunities to challenge rivals over their credibility. For the NDC, Baafi’s promise and subsequent retreat has become a test case for accountability in public life.
