Ghana’s football governing body has voted to extend the maximum presidential term from two to three four-year terms, paving the way for leaders to stay in office for up to 12 years.
The decision came during the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) 31st Ordinary Congress, held in Prampram ahead of the new season. The annual meeting, mandated by the GFA Statutes, brings together all 124 member bodies to review progress, present reports, and set long-term strategies for the sport.

The amendment, which aligns the GFA with FIFA and CAF governance statutes, was passed with the aim of ensuring stability and leadership continuity. Officials further said the change would allow more time for implementing development programs that require long-term oversight.
FIFA-backed change could impact Okraku’s tenure
According to the GFA, FIFA has endorsed the reform. It could directly affect current president Kurt Okraku, now in his second term with two years to go, potentially allowing him to contest for a third.
