The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed the arrest of a suspected gunman during a military cordon and search operation. The operation was launched early Monday in Binduri after troops heard sporadic gunfire from the Binduri Central Market area.
According to a GAF statement, troops from the 11 Mechanised Battalion led the operation alongside police and other forces. “Personnel swiftly moved to the location and cordoned off the area,” the official statement read on Monday afternoon.
A combined team, supported by the Police, conducted a detailed search to identify and apprehend the suspects involved. During the search, troops arrested one suspected gunman and handed him over to the police for investigation.
Security forces recover weapons and military equipment
GAF confirmed that the operation led to the retrieval of weapons and military-style gear from the area. Items recovered included an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, and 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, MyJoyOnline reported.
They also found 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, an empty M16 magazine, and a machete at the scene. Additional items included four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and one helmet used in combat operations.
GAF said the cache was secured and is now being held as evidence for ongoing investigations into the incident.
GAF foils infiltration attempt and calls for cooperation
Later the same day, GAF said armed men attempted to infiltrate Binduri but were stopped by military personnel. An exchange of gunfire followed, forcing the attackers to retreat without causing harm to residents or officers.
“The situation has since been brought under control,” the statement added. Military patrols in the area have been increased to ensure sustained peace and rapid response to future threats.
“We are working closely with other security agencies to ensure the safety and peace of the region,” GAF said.
GAF urged residents and the general public to cooperate fully with all ongoing security efforts.
