Following what party leadership characterized as improper media appearances that contravened internal party rules, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reported former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo to its National Disciplinary Committee.

NPP flags media remarks as breach of party discipline

The NPP characterized Safo’s appearance on JoyNews‘ The Pulse as a violation of a directive warning members not to openly discuss internal affairs in ways that could generate division or unrest, according to a statement signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.

The party claimed that her recent remarks were seen as harmful to party unity and at odds with current initiatives to foster unity and reestablish the party in advance of future political events.

The statement said, “Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo is expected to uphold the highest standards of discipline, loyalty, and unity, which are the founding principles of the NPP, as a former Member of Parliament, Deputy Majority Leader, and Minister of State.”

Party cites constitution in defending disciplinary action

The party also cited its constitution’s Article 3(5), which requires members to uphold, defend, and promote the party’s reputation at all times.

Leadership stressed that it is impossible to overlook noncompliance with such constitutional duties, especially by senior party officials who have held leadership positions.

The party has therefore decided to refer the case to the National Disciplinary Committee for additional research and suitable action in accordance with the party’s regulations.

It is anticipated that the committee will decide whether Safo’s actions call for any penalties under party rules. No timeframe for a decision has been provided by the NPP.

Adwoa Safo has not yet addressed the party’s position in public.
