As Ghana marked International Women’s Day 2025, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that Ghana women empowerment is not just a women’s issue but a national responsibility.

In her message commemorating the day, she urged all Ghanaians to unite in order to destroy the obstacles that prevent women from obtaining equal chances.

“When women thrive, families, communities, and nations prosper. Let us accelerate action for our mothers, our daughters, our sisters, and for the future of our great nation,” she stated.

The Vice President encouraged all citizens to contribute towards advancing gender equality, highlighting that women’s empowerment is crucial for the country’s progress.

Opoku-Agyemang underscored women’s fundamental position in national development while arguing for recognition and backing of their contributions.

“We must recognize the profound contributions of women in every sphere of society and break down barriers that hinder their participation in our nation’s progress,” she said.

Government initiatives aimed at supporting women’s development

Reflecting on Ghana’s strides in gender equality, Opoku-Agyemang commended the initiatives undertaken under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership to support women’s growth.

The Women’s Development Fund serves as a financial support system for women entrepreneurs to obtain necessary capital and business resources for business growth.

She also highlighted affirmative action policies introduced to increase women’s representation in leadership and governance. As part of these initiatives, she outlined that the goal is to give more power to women in making decision while creating space for greater political inclusivity.

“From boardrooms to classrooms, from farmlands to science labs, women continue to drive innovation, nurture growth, and shape the future of Ghana. Our commitment to breaking barriers and promoting inclusivity is unwavering,” she added.

While praising the existing progress, Opoku-Agyemang laid emphasis on the fact that the road to complete gender equality remains long.

She noted that women continue to encounter obstacles in various aspects of life but remained confident that higher female participation and government support can help women reach their complete potential.

A call to action for a more inclusive Ghana

While recognizing past achievements, the Vice President emphasized the need for continuous efforts to support women’s aspirations.

According to Graphic Online, she urged citizens, communities and institutions to dedicate themselves toward providing women with freedom, resources and opportunities needed to excel.

“As we celebrate this day, let us reaffirm our collective commitment to building a Ghana where every woman and girl has the freedom to dream, the power to achieve, and the support to excel,” she urged.

Opoku-Agyemang urged Ghanaians to maintain their battle for gender equality and support policies for inclusivity through programs that empower women.

She affirmed that by doing so, Ghana could create a society where women are fully empowered to contribute to national progress.
