With the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) urging immediate action, pressure is building on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release the withheld results of some students.

WAEC faces backlash over withheld WASSCE results

Seeking to stop a court ruling guiding the publication of the withheld results, WAEC sought a stay of execution at the High Court on Jan. 30. Alleged to have been deleted because of potential malpractice during the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the results have generated a lot of debate.

According to Myjoyonline, NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway demanded the prompt publication of all suppressed results at a February 4 press briefing. “They ought to send all the findings forthwith within a week. Their current investigations should finish within that period. We visited them on January 2 and more than a month have gone by. They ought to have had ample time by now to go over all these findings,” Botchway added.

Legal battle intensifies as WAEC seeks court intervention

Should WAEC disobey the court directive within the specified period, the union will launch legal action and organize demonstrations. “They should announce it within a week; failing which we will start a national series of demonstrations occupying their offices. We will make sure WAEC gets uncomfortable. shall they fail to perform, they shall notify Ghana’s government so that a new review committee may be designated.”

Further raising emotions over the matter, NUGS also accused WAEC of prejudice and unjust treatment in handling the omitted results.
