The technology industry is expansive in the world and Africa in particular and Ghana inclusive.  As the internet grows, mobile devices penetrations and industries embracing digital technology, the youths of this nation must grab the investment opportunities in technology related fields which promise high incomes, International market demand and an occasion to provide home grown solutions to local problems.  Below are ten IT careers which the Ghanaian youth should think of for a better future.   

Software development   

Software development is one of the key drivers of the new world paradigm.  For instance, mobile applications, websites and business system development, are professions that have been on the rise locally and internationally and therefore there is need for professionals.  It involves a proficiency in computer languages including Python, JAVA, JavaScript or C++. 

Both equally, mobile app development employing React Native and Flutter frameworks needs to be realised.  Besides, the technical qualifications, problem-solving and logic thinking in particular are required.  There has been emergence of firms such as Mpharma, Flutterwave, and Hubtel that have increased demand for software engineers at the local market.  Ghanaian developers can also work for companies in other countries while receiving fairly good remuneration.   

Cybersecurity specialist

The use of various technologies on business and personal levels as well as the presence of the Internet intensifies security threats.  It is a crucial area as cybersecurity specialists protect information, as well as systems as well as networks versus attacks.  It includes information on ethical hacking, penetration testing and information network security, and can be backed up with CEH, CISSP, or CompTIA Security+ certification.  Currently the organizations in Ghana are working on improvable and developing the overall cybersecurity framework, it incorporates many sectors including government departments, financial organizations as well as local tech giants.  Getting to know Ghana through it’s National Cyber Security Authority illustrates the increasing demand for cybersecurity professionals.

A worldwide accounted one billion dollar game industry with African context, themes, stories and civilization still untapped. Young people from Ghana can benefit from this by creating games relevant for Ghanaian and other players across the world. This entailing jobs are Programming for the games, 3D modeling for the games, and Game engine proficiency involving Unity and Unreal Engine. Ghanaian creators may carve out themselves in the worldwide gaming scene with sites like YouTube and Twitch offering visibility and the latitude to create culturally acceptable games.  

User interface design

Writing for interface and experience, or more commonly UI and UX, is crucial in developing beautiful and functional digital products. This sector requires understanding of users’ psychology and their behavior as well as effective command of design tools: Adobe XD and Figma. Prototyping and wireframing are two skills that must be inherent today as the creation of perfect digital solutions is critical. More firms in Ghana are developing websites and applications to ensure products are unique and provide excellent Consumer Experience UX/UI designers are in increasing demand.  

Engineer in robotics and automation

They require business thinking, problem solving, some programming knowledge, and knowledge of fundraising and networking. Companies like Ghana Tech Lab and incubation facilities such as MEST Africa support technology-based venture creation. Thus, given ad hoc support, youth in Ghana can create sustainable ventures addressing significant social demand and fostering economic growth.

To the youth in Ghana technology is not just a way of seeking employment but more importantly a way of contributing to the growth of their country. The current government vision called Digital Ghana Agenda is a good foundation for growth in these areas because it focuses on developing information communication technology (ICT) and increasing their usage. Self employment and innovation in election can place the youthful generation in Ghana at vantage point provided they acquire pertinent skills, certifications and appreciate both home based and internationally available opportunities.
