Suspect’s death in custody sparks outrage in Ejura community
According to Myjoyonline, Masawudu was transported to the Ejura Police Command for interrogation after being arrested on January 10 on suspicion of buying a stolen cell phone. Residents were incensed when he was later declared dead at the Ejura Government Hospital.
According to the results of an autopsy requested by Bawa Braimah, the Member of Parliament for Ejura-Sekyedumase, Masawudu passed away naturally as a result of pre-existing medical issues. According to the pathologist, there were no indications of police abuse or exterior injuries.
“The cause of death has been determined after an autopsy,” Braimah stated. The pathologist clarified that there was no cruelty involved and that the death was caused by an underlying medical issue. The body would have been clearly marked if there had been any physical assault.
Masawudu’s family, however, has vehemently disagreed with the results, asserting that he was healthy prior to his detention. One family member claimed, “The doctors are not telling us the truth.” “Masawudu was powerful and vivacious. He never suffered from any illnesses.
Protesters burn Ejura police station amid growing tensions
The police station was set on fire by irate teenagers in Ejura as a result of the event. Due to their growing susceptibility to armed robberies, some locals are now concerned about their safety.
Since the cops are there to protect us, we are saddened. According to a local, “burning down their station only makes things worse for the community.”
The destruction of the police station makes it impossible for the command to operate, which raises questions about local security. Authorities are being urged by the locals to reconstruct the station and bring peace back.
Even though things have somewhat calmed down, Masawudu’s family and some community members are still demanding justice. Although the family is getting ready for his funeral, they are adamant that the truth about his passing be revealed.
