Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Freddie Blay has expressed astonishment at the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) pursuit of additional parliamentary seats, despite securing a substantial majority of over 180 seats.
Speaking during an interview on Joy FM in Accra on December 24, 2024, Blay questioned the rationale behind the opposition party’s determination to contest further constituencies.
“I’m surprised the NDC, having won more than 180 seats, is still chasing two or three more,” Blay remarked, suggesting that the move could stoke political tensions.
His comments come amid ongoing disputes over parliamentary results, with the NDC vowing to secure victory in contested constituencies.
Caution against bypassing legal channels
Blay warned of the dangers of disregarding established judicial and electoral processes, emphasizing that undermining these institutions could lead to chaos.
“If justice is denied, can you imagine the chaos this country will run into?” he said. He stressed the importance of adhering to due process in addressing election disputes, urging all parties to respect the decisions of the Electoral Commission (EC) and the courts.
Using a hypothetical example, Blay illustrated the risks of overriding democratic norms: “If we’ve all voted, counted, and signed the pink sheets, and someone with a gun forces a declaration, chaos will ensue.”
Call for calm and democratic integrity
The former NPP chairman urged the NDC to prioritize national stability over their push for additional seats, advocating for calm and respect for Ghana’s democratic institutions.
“The focus should be on maintaining peace and upholding the integrity of our democracy,” Blay emphasized.
Blay’s remarks add to the broader discourse on ensuring fairness and stability in Ghana’s political landscape, particularly as tensions rise over electoral outcomes.
According to Graphic Online, he called on political stakeholders to demonstrate restraint and commitment to the rule of law, noting that the nation’s democratic principles must remain paramount.
