President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the Ezinlibo Forward Operating Base (FOB) on Monday in a bold move to enhance Ghana’s national security.
Located in the Western Region, the facility shows the government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s territorial waters and safeguarding critical economic assets.
The Ezinlibo Base joins a network of similar facilities to bolster Ghana’s defense capabilities. It reflects the nation’s resolve to tackle modern security challenges, including piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational crimes within the Gulf of Guinea.
“This facility symbolizes progress, security, and national resolve,” President Akufo-Addo said during the commissioning ceremony.
Boosting naval capacity and regional security
Strategically located, the Ezinlibo Base empowers Ghana’s Navy to monitor offshore oil and gas resources while fostering regional security cooperation.
As a logistics hub, the facility enhances operational readiness and provides advanced training opportunities for personnel.
According to Graphic Online, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the base’s critical role in combating complex maritime threats, adding, “It enables the Navy to act swiftly and precisely in protecting our maritime interests.”
The commissioning aligns with Ghana’s goal of maintaining peace and stability across West Africa, a key driver of economic growth and regional integration.
Fulfillment of a pledge to modernize security
The Ezinlibo Base marks the fulfillment of President Akufo-Addo’s promise in 2018 to modernize the Ghana Armed Forces.
The initiative, championed by the Ministry of Defense under Hon. Dominic Nitiwul and Hon. Kofi Amankwa Manu, reflects a commitment to addressing evolving security challenges.
The president also acknowledged the support of the Western Nzema Traditional Council for providing land for the project, describing their contribution as a selfless act of patriotism.
