  • Kyerematen warns the endorsement could tarnish Kufuor’s political legacy.
  • Kufuor praises Bawumia’s economic expertise and leadership potential.

The founder and flagbearer of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has openly criticized former President John Agyekum Kufuor over his endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections. Kyerematen described Kufuor’s endorsement as a move that undermines the impartiality expected of a statesman of his stature.

Kyerematen questions the endorsement’s impact

Kyerematen, speaking during an interview on Oyerepa TV, expressed concern that Kufuor’s public support for Bawumia could tarnish his longstanding political legacy.

While acknowledging Kufuor as a family member, he argued that the endorsement may damage the respect the former president commands across Ghana.

“Kufuor is my uncle, and I hesitate to publicly criticize him,” Kyerematen said. “However, his recent actions have cast a shadow over his political career. Have you noticed how his comments have sparked widespread criticism from the public?”

He further questioned the rationale behind Kufuor’s decision to wade into partisan politics at this stage of his life. According to Kyerematen, such actions are regrettable and could erode the former president’s legacy of neutrality.

Kufuor champions bawumia’s candidacy

Kufuor, during a media engagement on November 17, called on Ghanaians to back Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming elections, describing him as the most qualified candidate to lead the nation.

Highlighting Bawumia’s economic expertise, Kufuor recounted his contributions to stabilizing the Ghanaian currency during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

“Considering the present global context, I genuinely believe that Ghana’s economy would witness substantial growth if Bawumia were elected as president,” Kufuor stated. He added that Bawumia’s leadership could restore economic stability with “divine guidance” and strategic decision-making.

Kyerematen positions as an alternative

Kyerematen, who recently split from the NPP to form the Movement for Change, positioned himself as a viable alternative to the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Myjoyonline, he expressed confidence in his ability to lead Ghana through a new path of growth and governance, advocating for a shift away from traditional party politics.

Despite their familial ties, Kyerematen urged Kufuor to reconsider his public endorsement, asserting that it has already generated significant backlash. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining statesmanship and neutrality to preserve Ghana’s political integrity.
