  • Term limits are respected and regular elections are necessary for political stability in Ghana.
  • The president underscores the need for leaders to uphold democratic values in order to preserve stability.

The president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has reaffirmed that he does not intend to change the nation’s constitution in order to stay in power.

He emphasized that he is unable to explore any strategy to extend his term in office due to his dedication to democratic norms and constitutional administration.

Commitment to constitutional principles

President Akufo-Addo emphasized in an interview with France24 how committed he is to upholding Ghana’s democratic system. He emphasized that any attempt to change the constitutional term limits for presidents would put Ghana’s political stability in jeopardy because the country’s political stability is based on its well-established democratic processes.

Akufo-Addo stated, “The desire of our people to live within a democratic culture is incontestable.”

Akufo-Addo emphasized that he does not accept attempts to subvert term limits for selfish purposes as a leader who has traditionally championed constitutional administration.

“After the ground rules are established, I think it’s critical for national stability. He emphasized the necessity for leaders to uphold democratic norms, saying, “Those in positions of authority must respect the ground rules because doing so inspires others to do the same.”

Ensuring political stability through regular elections

Regular elections are important because they are a fundamental component of Ghana’s political stability, according to President Akufo-Addo. He believes that the nation’s peace and security have significantly benefited from the country’s commitment to a two-term presidential limit.

According to Graphic Online, he pointed out that the Ghanaian people have welcomed the commitment to holding regular elections as an indication of a healthy democracy.

The president claims that the protection of Ghana’s democratic tradition is one reason why term limits in the constitution are so important.

Akufo-Addo’s statements coincide with conversations that have begun to arise in many African countries regarding the extension of presidential tenure. He did, however, make it plain that he does not wish to follow in the footsteps of other leaders who seek constitutional amendments in an effort to prolong their terms in power.

Regarding term limits, Akufo-Addo’s position aligns with his long-standing support of democratic administration in Ghana. He emphasized that upholding constitutional principles promotes political stability and establishes a favorable standard for leaders to follow.

“The consistent practice of elections has ensured that power transitions remain smooth and peaceful, which is crucial for any democracy,” he stated.

Constitutional term limits as a safeguard

The president of Ghana restated his conviction that preserving public confidence in the democratic system requires adherence to constitutional principles.

He insisted that the nation’s leaders should preserve the democratic fabric.

Akufo-Addo came to the conclusion that changing the term limits for presidents would dishonor Ghanaians’ democratic beliefs in addition to endangering the stability of the nation.
