KEY POINTS

  • Numerous incidents have caused extensive damage to guardrails along the N1 Highway in Accra.
  • Broken guardrail fragments have increased the risk for both pedestrians and drivers.
  • Road users are urging authorities to take immediate action to prevent accidents.

Drivers on Accra’s busy N1 Highway are raising alarms over the poor state of guardrails along the road. Many sections of the highway, particularly on the Awoshie-Ablekuma stretch, have severely damaged guardrails due to frequent accidents.

These broken barriers now pose a serious risk to both motorists and pedestrians.

Chunks of destroyed guardrails litter the sides of the road, creating additional hazards for vehicles. Drivers worry that these obstacles could worsen the already dangerous conditions, especially when trying to manoeuvre between lanes.

According to Ghana Web, several motorists expressed their frustrations and concerns over the neglected state of the highway’s protective barriers.

Drivers Raise Concerns Over Safety

Many drivers, who use this route daily, feel the damaged guardrails expose them to unnecessary danger. One driver shared his frustration: “We have authorities responsible for road safety, but they don’t seem proactive. These guardrails are supposed to protect us, yet they’re broken and neglected.”

Another motorist explained the difficulty of navigating the outer lanes. The poor state of the guardrails makes lane changes even riskier, adding, “These conditions do little to prevent accidents. Something has to change.”

Neglect Extends to Other Parts of the Highway

It’s not just the Awoshie-Ablekuma section suffering from this problem. Drivers also pointed to the Achimota overhead section, where guardrails have been in disrepair for years. Despite the clear need for reconstruction, no significant efforts have been made to address the issue.

The N1 Highway is one of Accra’s busiest roads, connecting key parts of the city. Yet the lack of attention to these damaged guardrails is causing frustration and fear among road users.

Calls for Urgent Action

With accidents on the rise, road users are urging local authorities to act swiftly before more lives are endangered. Drivers believe that immediate repairs and maintenance would reduce fatalities and prevent further incidents on the already dangerous stretch of road. Many feel the time for action is long overdue.
