Mahama Warns EC on Voter Roll Errors Ahead of Elections

NDC Leader Urges Electoral Commission to Avoid Confusion

by Victor Adetimilehin

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a stern warning to the Electoral Commission (EC) about the potential chaos that could ensue if voter names are transferred without their knowledge. Mahama criticized the EC’s recent handling of the voter registration process, calling for immediate improvements to ensure a fair and transparent election.

Concerns Over Voter Registration Irregularities

Speaking at a recent NDC gathering, Mahama expressed deep concerns about reports of voters being unknowingly transferred to different polling stations. He stressed that such errors could lead to widespread confusion and disenfranchisement on Election Day. “Transferring names without voters’ knowledge can create confusion on Election Day,” Mahama stated, emphasizing the importance of clear communication between the EC and the electorate.

The former president argued that the integrity of the electoral process is at stake and urged the EC to “wake up” and fulfill its duties more diligently. According to Mahama, ensuring that voters are correctly registered and informed about their polling stations is crucial for maintaining public trust in the electoral process.

Call for Transparency and Accountability

Mahama’s comments come amid growing tensions over the EC’s voter roll management. He highlighted the need for transparency and accountability, urging the Commission to address the public’s concerns promptly. “The Electoral Commission must do its job properly,” Mahama added, calling for an audit of the voter registration process to rectify any mistakes.

The NDC leader also called for greater oversight of the EC’s activities, suggesting that an independent body might be necessary to monitor the Commission’s work. “We need to ensure that every Ghanaian who is eligible to vote can do so without any hindrances,” he stated. Furthermore, Mahama’s remarks reflect a broader concern among opposition parties about potential irregularities that could affect the outcome of the upcoming elections.

Election Preparations in the Spotlight

As Ghana prepares for its next round of elections, the spotlight is on the EC to ensure a smooth and credible process. Also, voter registration and the accuracy of the voter roll have become contentious issues, with political parties closely scrutinizing the EC’s actions. Moreover, Mahama’s statements have amplified these concerns, highlighting the need for vigilance and careful management of electoral processes.

The NDC is particularly focused on ensuring that all registered voters can exercise their right to vote without confusion or obstruction. Mahama’s critique of the EC underscores the stakes of the upcoming elections, as parties push for a level playing field. However, the opposition leader’s call for better handling of voter information serves as a reminder of the vital role that transparency plays in democratic processes.

As Election Day approaches, the pressure is on the EC to address these concerns and demonstrate its commitment to fairness and transparency. The Commission’s response to Mahama’s criticisms will likely be closely watched by both local and international observers, who are keen to see a credible election process in Ghana.
