Ghana School Feeding Program Goes Digital with New Overhaul

Digitization Aims to Improve Transparency and Efficiency Across the Nation

by Victor Adetimilehin

The Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP) is set to undergo a significant transformation as it shifts from manual operations to a fully digital system. This strategic move, announced by Gender Minister Darkoa Newman in Accra, is designed to enhance transparency, streamline processes, and improve resource allocation within the program.

A New Era of Digital Operations

Under the new digital system, prospective caterers will be required to apply online and pay a non-refundable fee of GH¢200. The program will introduce a comprehensive information management system that will oversee the selection of caterers, data collection, and payment processes. This shift marks a significant step forward in the administration of the GSFP, aiming to eliminate the inefficiencies and discrepancies that have plagued the program in the past.

“This process is opening up the opportunity for every prospective caterer to apply online,” Minister Newman explained during a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information. She emphasized that the new system will allow caterers to create profiles, complete applications, and manage their interactions with the program entirely online.

The digital platform is expected to be piloted in the New Juaben South and Krachi East districts before expanding nationwide. The full rollout is anticipated ahead of the 2024/2025 academic year, with further announcements expected as the pilot phase progresses.

Ensuring Accountability and Transparency

Minister Newman highlighted the importance of the new system in promoting transparency and reducing the potential for resource leakages within the program. By digitizing the application and selection processes, the GSFP aims to ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and that all transactions are documented and traceable.

To participate in the program, prospective caterers must meet specific requirements. These include proof of pre-financing, demonstrated by having a minimum of GH¢5,000 in their accounts, and possession of a valid health certificate. Moreover, this measure is intended to ensure that only qualified and prepared caterers are selected to provide meals for students across the country.

The new digital system also aligns with the government’s broader goal of modernizing public services and enhancing the delivery of essential programs. By leveraging technology, the GSFP seeks to improve the overall quality of service provided to students, ensuring that more children have access to nutritious meals, which is vital for their academic performance and well-being.

Moving Toward a Nationwide Rollout

As the pilot phase begins in two selected districts, the government plans to extend the digital system to all 16 regions of Ghana. This expansion is expected to bring uniformity and consistency to the program, ensuring that all regions benefit from the enhanced transparency and efficiency provided by the new system.

Minister Newman emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the success of the digital transition, which is seen as a critical step in the continued development of the GSFP. The initiative is also part of the government’s broader efforts to address issues related to food security, child nutrition, and education across the country.

In conclusion, the digital overhaul of the Ghana School Feeding Program represents a significant leap forward in the administration of this crucial initiative. By embracing technology, the government aims to create a more transparent, efficient, and accountable system that better serves the needs of Ghana’s children and supports their educational journey.
