Hosting senior citizens in Accra to mark Founders’ Day 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reiterated his pledge to oversee peaceful elections and step down as president on January 7, 2025. He emphasized that serving as president for two terms has been the greatest honor of his life.
A Legacy of Leadership
During the event, President Akufo-Addo shared his reflections on his presidency, noting the significant challenges and achievements of his administration. He acknowledged the difficulties faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlighted the nation’s recovery. “It’s been a very difficult time, but I believe most of us can see that we are now turning the corner and returning our economy back to normalcy,” he said.
Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to overcome current economic challenges, drawing on the nation’s history of resilience and growth. He assured that Ghana would revive the growth that once made its economy one of the fastest-growing in the world.
Commitment to Democracy
Looking ahead to the December 2024 elections, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his commitment to ensuring a fair and peaceful process. “My last major challenge is to preside over peaceful and fair elections in December 2024,” he declared. He underscored the importance of providing the best possible atmosphere for Ghanaians to choose their next president and parliament freely.
Akufo-Addo pledged to uphold Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa. He addressed skepticism from some citizens regarding his commitment to celebrating August 4th as Founders’ Day, reaffirming his support for the consensus reached by parliament in 2019. “The consensus that parliament arrived at in 2019, honoring Kwame Nkrumah with a memorial day and preserving the historical importance and significance of August 4th in our history is a good consensus, and it deserves to last,” he said.
A Hopeful Farewell
President Akufo-Addo commended Ghanaians for their support during his presidency and expressed hope for continued support for his successor. While he did not name his preferred successor, he hinted at his hopes, saying, “It is no secret who I hope that will be. And I hope the people of Ghana will agree with me.”
The event was marked by a celebratory atmosphere, with food, music, and dancing, reflecting the president’s appreciation for the contributions of senior citizens to the nation.
