Ghana Sets Dates for Presidential and Parliamentary Nominations

EC Announces Filing Period and Fees for December Elections

by Victor Adetimilehin

Starting Friday, August 2, 2024, aspiring candidates for Ghana’s December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections can begin downloading nomination forms from the Electoral Commission’s (EC) website. The completed forms will be accepted by the EC from Monday, September 9 to Friday, September 13, 2024.

Nomination Process and Fees

Candidates interested in running for president must use the official Nomination Forms provided by the EC. These forms must be signed by the candidates themselves and at least two registered voters from each District Assembly in Ghana.

In a press release issued on Thursday, August 1, the EC emphasized that this process aligns with Regulations 6, 7, and 9 of the 2020 Public Elections Regulations (C.I 127). Moreover, Presidential candidates will be required to pay a filing fee of GH¢100,000. Female candidates and persons with disabilities will benefit from a reduced fee of GH¢75,000.

For parliamentary candidates, the filing fee is set at GH¢10,000, with a discounted rate of GH¢7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities. These candidates must pick up and submit their forms within the designated hours: 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day during the nomination period.

Guidelines for Submitting Forms

The EC has specified that all payments must be made by Banker’s draft, addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. This ensures a secure and traceable transaction process.

“All candidates vying for the presidency will need to make their payments upon submission of their Nomination Forms,” the EC stated. This process is part of the commission’s effort to streamline and secure the election nomination process.

The press release also directed all inquiries about the presidential elections to the EC Chairperson, while questions about parliamentary elections should be addressed to the Returning Officers of the respective constituencies. However, this clear division of responsibilities aims to facilitate a smooth nomination process.

Preparations for the Elections

As the nomination period approaches, the EC has assured the public of its commitment to a fair and transparent process. This year’s election is significant as it comes at a time of heightened political engagement in Ghana. Moreover, the nomination process is a crucial step in ensuring that all candidates meet the necessary legal and procedural requirements.

The EC’s emphasis on using the official Nomination Forms and adhering to the stipulated guidelines underscores its dedication to maintaining order and legitimacy in the electoral process. However, candidates are encouraged to carefully follow the instructions to avoid any disqualifications.

The December 7, 2024, elections are expected to be highly competitive, with numerous candidates vying for both presidential and parliamentary positions. The EC’s detailed announcement is intended to provide clarity and ensure that all potential candidates are well-informed and prepared for the nomination process.
